Morris Malachi Bowden was born in Meriwether County on October 9, 1847, the son of James F. Bowden and Sarah Murphy. At the age of 17 he enlisted in Company E, 2nd Ga Reserves under Capt. W.L. Hubbard. His company surrendered in Greensboro, NC on April 26, 1865. He married Frances Summerfield Simmons, the daughter of Thomas Simmons and Mahala Barmore in 1866. The Bowden's moved to Muscogee County, GA settling in Flat Rock in 1883. M.
M. Bowden, a prosperous farmer, also ran a lumber mill, cotton gin and stores in
the area. He was active in politics, serving as the Steam Mill district
chairman of the Muscogee Democratic Party. He also served as a member of the
county school board. In 1894 he was appointed postmaster of the Flat Rock area. M. M. Bowden died October 29, 1900. His obituary stated that he had been suffering from liver trouble for several weeks. Frances Bowden died March 29, 1909.
